Citations of Special Achievement - Rules in Effect for the Class of 2007
New rules are in effect for the Class of 2008 and beyond.
The Department of Economics provides the opportunity for
specialization in one of six areas of economics. By meeting
the requirements listed below, you can earn a Citation of
Special Achievement in one of these six areas:
- Applied Microeconomics
This Citation is designed for the student interested in
the application of microeconomics to a variety of economic topics.
Courses in this citation typically make use of both theoretical
and empirical approaches to study individual behavior and
governmental policies.
- Economic Theory and Application
This Citation is designed for the student who wishes to
obtain a broad perspective on the field of Economics. Any of the
elective economics courses can be combined to fulfill this Citation.
However, to provide students with sufficient breadth,
one additional course is required.
- Finance
This Citation is designed for the student interested in the
operations of financial markets. The courses in this Citation
focus on the economics of the banking system and securities
markets. Courses offered by the Simon School of Business
(other than Finance 205) cannot be used to satisfy the requirements
of this Citation.
- Macroeconomics
This Citation is designed for the student
interested in the functioning of the macro economy. Macroeconomics
has long been one of the signature fields of a Rochester economics
degree and the courses can be used for this Citation provide an
in-depth introduction to the Rochester approach.
- Mathematical Economics
This Citation is designed for students who
are particularly interested in exploring how more advanced
mathematical techniques can be utilized in economic settings.
Students interested in this tract are advised to supplement their
training with additional courses in mathematics.
The requirements for a Citation of Special Achievement
are the following:
- You should submit an application for the Citation in your senior year no later than March 1st.
- You must have a 2.5 GPA in economics courses.
For the Economic Theory and Application Citation a 3.5 is required.
- You must take nine rather than eight courses in Economics. To earn a Citation you must take one additional elective beyond the concentration requirements. For Economic Theory and Application you must take ten courses. An Internship can be used as one of the nine courses for the Finance and Managerial Economics Citations.
- Four electives must be distributed within a field of specialization as shown on the Citation Courses webpage. For a Citation in Economic Theory and Application the six electives do not have to be in any one area.
You must apply to the Department of Economics by filling out and submitting an Application for Citation of Special Achievement form. This form is also available from the Undergraduate Coordinator in Harkness 238. After meeting the requirements, you will receive a formal Citation along with your diploma at graduation. The receipt of this Citation can be cited on your resume.
