Major in Economics and Business Strategies
The Department of Economics is pleased to announce the approval by the College Curriculum Committee of a new major in Economics and Business Strategies. The Department is seeking approval from the New York State Education Department. We expect NYS approval in time for students in the class of 2010 to pursue this degree. The Economics and Business Strategies major will be the third major available to students studying Economics, joining our existing majors in Economics and in Financial Economics. The proposed new major will train students in the rigorous analytic methods required for our two existing majors, supplemented by a set of courses that will be of particular interest to students who want to focus on questions of organizational design, marketing, pricing, or other strategic decisions of firms.
The proposed major in Economics and Business Strategies would consist of the 5 required economics courses required for the Economics and Financial Economics majors plus a required course in industrial organization. Students would also be required to fulfill the departmental calculus requirement and writing requirement. Students choose from a 4 course package from one of two tracks. The "Organizations and Markets" track consists of advanced courses in microeconomics with an emphasis on questions such as organization design, pricing, and other strategic decisions by firms. This 4 course package consists of Game Theory, a course in Mathematical Tools in Economics, a course in the Economics of Organizations and Markets, and a new course in Competitive Strategies. The alternative track, "Methods for Market Analysisâ" focuses on further work in applied statistics and econometrics, as well as marketing. These students would take a 2 course marketing sequence offered by the Simon School, a course in sampling design from the statistics department and an advanced, applied econometrics course. Students in either track would also be required to take 3 additional electives, chosen from any of the Economics department electives, 200-level Simon School courses, 2 relevant psychology courses (Industrial and Organizational Psychology or Achievement and Motiviation), and a business ethics course offered by Philosophy. For students seeking the concentration in Economics and Business Strategies with Honors, students would take the honors sections of Eco 207 and Eco 209, Eco 208 would replace one of the three elective choices, and they would also be required to take Senior Research Seminar (Eco 389w) as an additional course.
